The Memory of Ice: A Frozen Archive

A glacier is, in truth, the oldest diary on Earth. Each winter’s snow presses down the snow of the year before; over centuries these stacked layers trap within them tiny bubbles of that day’s air, ash from distant forest fires and dust blown in from the deserts. When you drill out an ice core, you hold in your hand a breath exhaled thousands of years ago, a frozen sky.

Mer de Glace, the legendary sea of ice in the Alps, is just such an archive. When you step inside it, the light turns blue, green and amber; your footsteps echo as in a cathedral, and time begins to flow to a heavy rhythm quite unlike the world outside. Those crooked cracks in the ice and the veins drawn by trapped sediment are, in fact, the handwriting of ages past.

The dial of this Iced Sea, limited to 700 pieces, carries that frozen memory onto the wrist. Its organic texture in cream and brown is a portrait of an old summer suspended in the depths of the glacier, of sediment-laced layers and of an amber light. And the watch itself, like a glacier, is designed to trap a moment within it; but this time what is trapped is not air, but the absence of air.

Gratté-Boisé: A Glacier Scraped by Hand

The deep, light-absorbing glacier texture you meet when you look at the dial is not the product of an ordinary print, a laser engraving or a chemical coating. To carry the thousand-year-old ice cracks at the heart of Mer de Glace onto the dial, Montblanc revived Gratté-Boisé, an ancestral technique of watchmaking history that had almost vanished.

Completing a single dial requires more than thirty complex stages and over 40 hours of uninterrupted handwork. The process begins with the preparation of hard wood: the master shapes blocks of high-density hardwood such as dried oak and boxwood by hand at the scale of microns; these tips are then dipped into a micro-abrasive paste made of diamond dust and mineral oils.

Then comes the scraping (gratté): thousands of circular, vertical and diagonal strokes are applied with the wooden tips onto a brass plate only 0.5 mm thick. The master must control the pressure he applies to the metal every second; if it is even a milligram too much, the thin plate buckles and days of labour are ruined in an instant. This organic friction of the wood fibres creates on the plate millions of micro-cracks, each of a completely different depth and angle; the dial then passes through a special colouring process.

The resulting surface, though only 0.5 mm thick, offers a three-dimensional optical depth that draws you into a glacier crevasse metres deep. Because the light breaks differently at every angle, the dial changes colour and depth through the day, just like real ice.

The Invisible Engineering: Zero Oxygen

What keeps the clarity of this glacier dial forever is an invisible engineering inside the case. To prevent even a single oxygen molecule from entering as the case is closed, Montblanc developed a special sealing process inspired by the medical and aerospace industries.

After the MB 24.17 calibre is placed in the case, the whole assembly is taken into a vacuum chamber isolated from atmospheric air; powerful pumps draw out all the air and micro-level moisture inside. The emptied space is filled entirely with 100 percent pure nitrogen, which reacts chemically with nothing, and the case is hermetically sealed under this atmosphere. The moment it closes, the watch severs its bond with the Earth’s atmosphere forever.

This has two concrete benefits. First, the watch never fogs: the mist that appears on the inner surface of the crystal in freezing cold is in fact the condensation of moisture inside the case; because there is no moisture within, the crystal keeps its clarity even under the harshest thermal shock. Second, the movement’s oils do not age: oils oxidise, dry and harden as they meet oxygen, but in an oxygenless nitrogen environment they keep their structure; so wear drops to almost zero and service intervals stretch to decades.

A Time Capsule in Seven Hundred Copies

This Iced Sea was made in only 700 pieces, and each carries its own number on the caseback. At the centre of the sapphire caseback, an iceberg floating on the sea is engraved by hand; the surrounding inscription reads "sealed without oxygen." The case is made of corrosion-resistant steel; with its brown ceramic bezel and 300 metres (1000 ft) of water resistance, it is both a diving instrument and a time capsule.

In the end, this watch resolves a contradiction with grace. A glacier preserves the past by trapping its air within; this watch preserves its mechanism and its fragile glacier dial from the corrosive breath of time by leaving the air itself outside. What you carry on your wrist is not merely a watch; it is a frozen, untouched moment into which no molecule can seep.
