In the Shadow of the Matterhorn: Quantum Entanglement and the Unseen Reality

In the heart of the Swiss Alps, a freezing wind blew across the slopes of Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, at 3,800 metres above Zermatt. As the sun struck the snow crystals and created a dazzling burst of ultraviolet, two scientists slid down the steep slope, caught their breath, and pulled aside.

One was Prof. Dr. Lukas, who worked on quantum field theory at ETH Zurich; the other was Prof. Dr. Julian, professor of inorganic solid-state chemistry and materials science at EPFL.

Julian lowered his ski mask slightly and blew on his gloved hands with his steaming breath: "Look at this freezing cold, Lukas... In the macro realm we stand here like blocks of ice, but if you look at the molecular level, this freezing air is slowing the thermal vibration of the atoms. It reminded me of the million-dollar cryogenic coolers you use to cool superconducting qubits in the quantum lab in Zurich."

Lukas smiled: "You are quite right, Julian. Without suppressing thermal noise we cannot prevent quantum collapse. But sometimes I think; while we struggle in the lab at near-absolute-zero to preserve superpositions, the universe itself puts on the greatest quantum miracles right before our eyes without needing any cooler at all."

Julian asked with curiosity: "Which miracle are you talking about?"

Lukas lifted his ski goggles onto his forehead and cast a deep look toward the valley, toward the white infinity: "You know... when the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics went to Alain Aspect, John Clauser and Anton Zeilinger, the whole world finally had to accept quantum entanglement. Two particles light-years apart interacting at the same instant, with no physical link between them... The illusion of locality that classical physics thought unshakeable collapsed before our eyes. This macro realm that appears solid, discrete and objective to us is, at the quantum level, made entirely of probability waves and invisible bonds."

Julian smiled: "When you descend to the subatomic level, the material illusion dissolves, my friend. We chemists too see matter by its colour and hardness, but the essence of the matter is the electron transfers at the orbital level."

Just then the two stepped into the solid ice tunnel hundreds of metres beneath the glacier, the Gletscherpalast (Ice Palace) cave. The daylight was cut off in an instant. A pitch-black, absolute darkness enveloped everything.

The Spark in the Dark and the Truth Behind the Curtain

When they reached the middle of the tunnel, Julian suddenly stopped. His eyes had widened in astonishment. On Lukas’s left wrist, a light source of incredible brightness, somewhere between turquoise and neon green, had burst forth, cutting through the darkness like a sword!

It was not only the hands of the watch; the watch’s vast 44 mm ceramic case, its dial, all the calendar indications upon it, and even the entire rubber strap were glowing by themselves. It was as if he carried a miniature lantern, a radioactive nucleus, on his wrist.

Julian instinctively drew back and cried out: "Mein Gott, Lukas! What is going on there?! Is a miniature quantum reactor running on your wrist? What kind of fusion explosion is this!"

Lukas burst out laughing and held out toward Julian the watch glowing like a neon-green lantern on his wrist: "Calm down, my friend! It is a reactor of sorts, but not nuclear, a photoluminescence reactor! It absorbed ultraviolet photons from that intense Alpine sun outside, and now the electrons that made a quantum leap are being released back into the darkness as light."

Julian reached out his hand as if to touch the flawless green-blue light radiating from the body of the watch: "Incredible... This is not merely a paint applied to the dial! The mass of the watch, its ceramic case and its strap have become light itself."

Lukas took a deep breath and leaned against the ice wall: "You know, Julian, at that fascinating point where philosophy and quantum physics intersect, we always meet this truth: the immense depth and magnificent architecture of the universe present to our minds, in the macro realm, a philosophical curtain of illusion we call causality. But when we descend to the lower layers of existence and of the quantum, those superficial causes withdraw one by one, and all that remains behind is a bare truth of energy, independent of matter. We think that light comes from a surface paint, or that matter is an unshakeable barrier. But when you descend to the atomic level, that curtain of visible causes disappears; neither matter nor darkness remains... only the dance of photons and the leap of electrons from one orbital to another. This watch is a copy, on our wrist, of that truth stripped of the curtains of the quantum world."

The Bloody History of Photons and Molecular Quantum Traps

As a chemist, Julian added with shining eyes: "You are right, Lukas! Out there were those invisible UV rays; behind the visible causes, energy accumulated. Now, in the darkness, that curtain of perception has been drawn back, and that hidden truth at the quantum level has burst out as light! But you know, the history of chemistry that chased this light passed through very bloody roads."

As he continued walking through the tunnel in the light of the watch, Lukas asked: "What kind of tragedy took place, Julian? How did mankind find the watch that glows in the dark?"

Julian began to tell the story: "When Marie Curie discovered radium at the start of the 1900s, the world was enchanted. In the watch industry, Radium-226 was mixed into zinc sulphide paint. Radium, scattering alpha particles, constantly bombarded the zinc sulphide and gave off a light whose battery never ran out. But the price was horrific... In the 1920s, the young women working in watch factories in the United States, known to history as the Radium Girls, sharpened their brushes with their lips in order to draw the numerals on the dials to the millimetre. The radium they took into their bodies, mistaken for calcium, lodged in their bones. Over the years their jawbones rotted, and they died of terrible cancers. Light had left a deadly curtain behind it."

Lukas nodded sadly: "Then was there a switch to tritium?"

"Yes," said Julian. "When radium was banned, in the 1960s its place was taken by Tritium and Promethium-147. Tritium gave off weak beta radiation and was safer, but its half-life was 12.3 years. After 10 to 15 years the light of the watches faded away. And at last the fateful year of 1993 arrived! The Japanese scientist Kenzo Nemoto invented a molecule that was non-radioactive, harmless to human health and rechargeable an infinite number of times: Strontium Aluminate. In 1998, Nemoto partnered with the Swiss firm RC Tritec AG and gave birth to Swiss Super-LumiNova, the brand that changed the world of watchmaking. Do you know what the chemical secret is, Lukas? The Europium ions added into the molecule act as the light-giving activator. They absorb sunlight and emit photons. The auxiliary dopant, the Dysprosium ions, are each a quantum trap! When sunlight strikes the watch, these Dysprosium ions imprison the electrons that leap to the upper orbital in micro-traps. The electrons cannot fall back down at once; over the course of hours they slowly escape the trap and, as they return to the ground state, they emit photons. That is precisely why this glow lasts for hours!"

"Yes, my friend," said Lukas as he took the watch in his hand. "This is the most brilliant perpetual-calendar module in the history of watchmaking, developed in the 1980s by IWC’s legendary watchmaker Kurt Klaus. There are no complicated pushers or hidden pins; all the calendar functions are set in a synchronised way simply by turning the crown. In the window at 8 o’clock the current year is shown digitally. Thanks to the special century wheel inside the movement, the watch mechanically calculates leap years and the 30/31-day months by itself, without needing a single correction until the year 2100. The double moon-phase display at 12 o’clock, meanwhile, tracks the Moon’s phases in both the Northern and the Southern Hemispheres, and its deviation is only 1 day in 577.5 years! Beating at the heart of the watch, the IWC-made manufacture Calibre 52615, with its Pellaton automatic winding system and its ceramic components, offers a full 7-day, that is 168-hour, power reserve."

From the Glacier to the Daylight: On the Border of Two Realms

The two scientists walked toward the end of the tunnel. As they approached the exit of the Gletscherpalast, the steep Alpine sun coming from outside struck them once again.

The neon light of the IWC Ceralume on Lukas’s wrist turned, under the intense daylight, into a matte and noble snow-white ceramic body. The light had returned to its source; the photons had withdrawn behind the invisible curtain.

As he fastened his skis, Julian looked at Lukas: "A perfect experiment, Lukas. From the dark tragedy of the Radium Girls to Nemoto’s Europium and Dysprosium traps; from quantum leaps to IWC’s Ceralume ceramic revolution... And most importantly, a journey to the real light behind that curtain of causes."

Lukas smiled, wiped the white ceramic case of the watch, and looked toward the summit of the Matterhorn: "What were we saying, Julian? Had there been no pitch-black darkness, we could never have witnessed that magnificent quantum dance of photons. Just like time... A human life, too, reveals the true light within only while passing through the trials of darkness."

The two scientists let themselves go onto the white snow. Time went on flowing, as flawless as the quantum architecture on their wrists and as free as the wind of the Matterhorn.
