The Dostoevsky of Watchmaking

You do not open a Dostoevsky novel for the plot on its surface. Reading Notes from Underground, Crime and Punishment or The Idiot, what truly strikes you is that merciless depth descending into the thinnest, most invisible layers of the human soul. This giant of Russian literature knew how to hide an entire universe beneath the smallest gesture. Today, another master from the same soil does exactly this with metal: Konstantin Chaykin.

Chaykin's new ThinKing Mystery is a mere 1.65 millimetres thick. That is slightly thicker than a credit card and all but indistinguishable from its own leather strap. While giants like Piaget, Bvlgari and Richard Mille battled fiercely for the title of the world's thinnest mechanical watch, the Russian master quietly stepped onto the stage and, with a series of just 12 pieces, claimed that hotly disputed crown for himself. The one-off ThinKing prototype unveiled in 2024 sold for CHF 508,000 at Phillips in 2025; now that record has become a real, series-produced watch. This is precisely why calling Chaykin the Dostoevsky of the watchmaking world is no exaggeration: his genius, too, lies hidden in the greatest depth concealed within the smallest space.

Notes from Underground: The Invisible Mechanism

When you see the word Mystery in the name of a watch, you know that an unseen, hidden mechanism carries the time within it. In the ThinKing Mystery, the two circles that display the time are fully transparent sapphire discs; they bear no bridge and no supporting bar. The numerals and pointers seem to float in mid-air, suspended in the void.

This idea is a tribute to Chaykin's own Mystery 1000 Jewels of 2007, and, further back, to Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin, the great 19th-century illusionist, inventor and watchmaker. Robert-Houdin designed table clocks whose single hand was driven by a transparent disc, their movement entirely concealed within the case. It is just like Dostoevsky's characters: beneath the visible surface, an underground no one can see works silently on. In the ThinKing Mystery, too, the true drama lies in the invisible wheels turning out of sight beneath those transparent discs.

The Smiling Mask: A Tragic Clown

Chaykin's signature is to engrave a human face onto his watches; his famous Wristmons family turns the dial into the face of a clown, a Joker. In the ThinKing Mystery, the two sapphire discs become eyes; these eyes, showing the hour and the minute, gaze back at the viewer, a tiny pointer becomes a nose, and the brand's name, KONSTANTIN CHAYKIN, curves along the bottom like a smile.

But this smile is not innocent. Like Dostoevsky's characters, it hides a deep seriousness, even a pain, behind a cheerful mask. Like the pure-hearted Prince Myshkin of The Idiot or the underground man wrestling with himself, this clown face too, with all its surface charm, conceals the immense engineering torment beneath it. A smiling mask, and behind it one of the hardest problems in all of watchmaking.

Thinness Is, in Truth, a Depth

1.65 millimetres. To reach this figure, Chaykin overturned every habit of watchmaking. The caseback of the watch is at the same time the mainplate of the movement; that is, the skeleton of the mechanism and the case itself are fused into a single whole. The Calibre K.23-3.1 is embedded directly into the case, and the gear train is spread across two separate levels to reduce vertical height to the minimum. A total of 284 components and 54 jewels are packed into this paper-thin volume.

Since a traditional crown is impossible at this thinness, it has been eliminated entirely. The watch is wound and set with a special key fitted with a safety mechanism, or via two wheels in its dedicated box. The most elegant invention at its heart is the patented dual balance: two wheels interlocking through teeth work together to preserve the frequency and regularity of the oscillation. The meshing of these two toothed wheels is just like the two strands of DNA's double helix locking together through base pairs; one is meaningless without the other, yet together they keep the rhythm of life. The watch beats at 18,000 vibrations per hour, with a Swiss lever escapement.

Inside the Cell: From DNA to Time

To truly understand this watch, one must go under the microscope, down into the depths of a cell. The barrel, just like the DNA in the nucleus of a cell, holds all the potential energy, the raw information of time, coiled within it. This single barrel, patented, ultra-thin and reinforced with stiffening ribs, slowly unwinds its coil to release that energy.

At this point the gear train behaves like a chain of transcription and translation. Just as, in the cell, the information in DNA is first copied into RNA and then read at the ribosomes to be turned into a protein, a visible and functional structure, so in the ThinKing Mystery the energy hidden in the barrel is passed from wheel to wheel and finally turned into a visible result, into time, by rotating those two transparent sapphire discs. Chaykin's ingenious solution enters exactly here: three rollers placed around each indicator guide the sapphire discs while draining very little of the mainspring's energy. It is just like a ribosome reading the mRNA strand step by step and turning it into a protein without wasting energy. It is thanks to this efficiency that the power reserve rose from 32 hours in the prototype to 38.

And just as in the cell, there is almost no margin for error in this process. As vital as it is for an enzyme to fit its substrate exactly, like a key in a lock, it is just as vital here for the parts to match one another with micron precision.

The Price of a Micron: The Ordeal of Craft

The truly great story begins right here, in the unbearable difficulty of the craftsmanship. Manufacturing a part flawlessly is not enough; finishing it, that is, polishing, decorating and retouching it, is at least as hard as making it. So much so that the removal of even the tiniest sliver, the slightest loss of material, can distort the geometry of the part and throw off the dimensions of the entire system. Chaykin's masters apply perlage and straight graining to the bridges and mainplate, and circular graining to the wheels; every bevel is cut and polished by hand. Yet they must do this with the precision not of a surgeon but of a microsurgeon.

The case alone passes through roughly 40 separate inspection checkpoints to make sure it works correctly. The tolerances are so tight that a deviation of a single micron, a thousandth of a millimetre, spells disaster. The steel alloy used is put through an intensive heat treatment to make it harder and more resistant to permanent deformation; at this stage the watchmaker must know the material and how the tool interacts with it almost by instinct. In the experts' words, this is a rigour closer to aerospace engineering than to traditional watchmaking.

Let us return to the cell here: the living cell has repair enzymes that constantly proofread and mend its DNA so that no error creeps in while it is being copied. Chaykin's 40 checkpoints are the human-hand equivalent of those molecular correction mechanisms. Just as a single mispaired base leads to a mutation, a single micron of deviation drives the whole mechanism to its death. And it is exactly here that Dostoevsky meets us again: a great work is born only of great ordeal. The writer composed his deepest novels under debt, illness and the pressure of deadlines, all but consuming himself. To bring these 12 watches into being, Chaykin too dared to work at that merciless edge where not even a micron is forgiven.

The Greatest Depth in the Smallest Space

On this watch even the strap is part of the mechanics: a patented solution of high-quality leather fitted with resilient titanium stiffeners and elastic inserts reduces unwanted stress on the case and protects this fragile thinness. Without its strap, the watch weighs just 12.1 grams, almost a feather. Even winding it is a ritual: a carbon-and-steel box of 112 components, or a steel key of 26 components with a safety mechanism, is devoted to the task.

In the end, what stands before us is less a watch than a thought. Dostoevsky could fit the abysses of the human soul into a single sentence; the cell hides the blueprint of an entire living being in an invisible molecule; and Konstantin Chaykin has engraved the whole depth of time into a piece of metal as thin as paper. The ThinKing Mystery whispers to us: greatness is measured not by the space it occupies but by the depth it can compress into the smallest space. And that is precisely why, behind that smiling clown's face, the silent ordeal of a genius truly lies hidden.
