The human mind tries to make sense of the universe inside the narrow corridors of the three spatial dimensions it is imprisoned in and of linear time. Yet the eleven dimensional space-time continuum that M-theory promises brings word that existence is not made of visible matter alone, and that there are unseen divine and cosmic layers curled in on themselves.

İsmail, in pursuit of that truth, was a scientist who had moved ahead of his age in both astrophysics and quantum mechanics. By day he mapped the vast gravitational lensing of galaxy clusters through telescopes; by night he worked out the mathematical symmetries of wave functions in the data streaming from particle accelerators. But at the limit mathematics and observation reach, he began to feel the deep spirit behind the equations. One day, studying quantum collapse data in his laboratory, something broke open in his consciousness: the phenomena were not merely cold rules; each one pointed to a cosmic will, to a divine manifestation.

With that awakening, the universal laws he observed began to seep into İsmail’s dreams like invitations. In his dreams he was drawn into the furnaces of stars, glided between the pixels of the Planck scale, and woke at the door of those extra dimensions hidden in the mathematics of M-theory. Freed from the shackles of the material world, his spirit crystallised, this sufi traveller passed at last beyond the four dimensional physical realm and set out on that sacred journey reaching from the fifth dimension to the eleventh. In each one he met a luminous appointed spirit that holds the universe up.

Stepping into the fifth dimension, the traveller sees space stretching and expanding at an endless rate. The luminous being standing before him is the spirit of dark energy, which fills sixty eight per cent of the universe and cannot be seen.

I know you from my observations, says the traveller İsmail. My telescopes showed galaxies receding from us faster and faster. I cannot see you, but I feel you taking the universe by the arms and pulling it outward. What is this pushing force, and why do you expand the universe so?

I am the agent of the will that built the sky and goes on widening it, answers the spirit of dark energy. People suppose the universe is a motionless dome. But I am that mysterious impulse carrying the galaxies away from one another. The Creator intended through me that nothing created should close in upon itself. That being should not narrow, but keep growing, stretching, widening.

In the sixth dimension the traveller meets a transparent but immense mass that keeps the galaxies from flying apart and does not even reflect light. This is dark matter.

In my laboratory on Earth I searched and searched for the gravitational traces you left, says the traveller. The stars on the outer arms of galaxies should have been flung away, but you were holding them. You have no light and no visible mass; how do you hold trillions of stars together?

I am the power of the unseen, says the spirit of dark matter. Galaxies turn so fast that without my hidden gravitational grip they would all be scattered into the void and lost. The Creator intended through me that man should not take himself for nothing more than the matter he can see. I am the holding passion of unseen divine mercy upon matter, the cosmic cement.

Rising into the seventh dimension, the traveller is shaken by the death cry of an enormous star. As it collapses, gold, platinum and iron are scattered around it. This is supernova nucleosynthesis.

As an astronomer I looked for the source of the heavy elements in the hearts of stars, says the traveller. This violent explosion, this terrible destruction, looks like an ending. Tell me, what is this blast?

This is not destruction but the most magnificent birth in existence, traveller, replies the spirit of the supernova. I am the cosmic mirror of that order which brings the living out of the dead and the dead out of the living. I burst the heart of a dead star that has finished its life and scatter into the void the heavy elements synthesised in its breast. The star dies so that from its ashes new planets may be born, and the iron in your blood, the calcium in your bone, the life in the soil. The Creator intended through me that death should be read not as absolute annihilation but as the beginning of a higher life.

In the eighth dimension the traveller witnesses two enormous, impossibly dense neutron stars turning about one another and merging with a tremendous cry. This is a kilonova.

When I caught in the gravitational wave detectors those signals that set the fabric of space-time trembling, I felt this vast union, says the traveller. You two giants, a teaspoon of whose matter weighs as much as mountains, what do you whisper as you merge?

We are matter in its most compressed, most dense state, says the spirit of the kilonova. We bend through space-time and merge. In that moment of union the rarest and most precious metals of the universe are born, and waves in space-time with them. The Creator intended through me that the overcoming of hardship and of great pressure should give birth to the greatest treasures. Raw materials turn into priceless gems only by being cooked in this cosmic furnace.

In the ninth dimension the traveller reaches the pixel structure lying beneath the smooth appearance of the universe, the Planck length and Planck time.

We took time for a smooth flowing river, but my equations told me there was a lower pixel limit, says the traveller. Why are you so minute, so broken up, so parcelled?

I am the seal of renewed creation the Creator struck upon existence, the making anew at every instant, whispers the Planck spirit. People take time and space for a smooth river flowing without a break. But I am the pixel of the universe, that smallest square measured at about one point six times ten to the minus thirty fifth of a metre. Neither time nor space is continuous; at every Planck time the universe is erased entirely and created again.

In the tenth dimension the traveller sees the cloud of light in which infinite possibilities, not yet given form, stand together. This is quantum superposition.

In Schrödinger’s wave equation I used to compute the position of a particle as a cloud of probability, says the traveller. Who are you, and why are you everywhere at once without taking a single shape?

I am the ocean of infinite possibilities of the Creator, not yet made manifest, says the spirit of superposition. In that narrow dimension you came from, people suppose a thing is either there or here. But I am all the possibilities that have not yet been granted manifestation. Evil and good, being and non-being, all wait together in my breast, side by side. The Creator intended through me that the possibilities in the divine knowledge should be infinite; that destiny should stand not as one rigid prison but as an immense ocean of possibility waiting in his presence.

Reaching at last the eleventh dimension, the outer limit of M-theory, the traveller sees those possibilities of the tenth turn, at the touch of a consciousness, into a single concrete instant. This is the observer effect.

The moment we placed a measuring instrument in the laboratory, we would see the wave function collapse, says the traveller. Why does everything you touch lock onto a single reality?

I am the manifestation of consciousness and of witnessing, traveller, says the spirit of the observer. Those infinite possibilities in the ocean of superposition collapse and become reality only when a conscious eye looks upon the realm. The Creator intended through me that man should not be a casual spectator of this world. Man is a sacred witness who, by his witnessing, his gaze and his consciousness, mediates the turning of divine decree into manifestation.

When İsmail, sufi traveller and scientist, completes this cosmic journey and returns to the world, he finds the truths he learned made concrete in the three watch set Frederique Constant calls The Elements Collection. Three watches stand side by side inside a wooden presentation box, and on its lid the maison has set down its own sentence: the collection is a tribute to the materials used, to stone and to brass, a symbol of the raw beauty of the earth.

The set was made in only eighty eight examples worldwide, and that number is no accident; the house was founded in 1988. The three watches in each box carry the same number. All three have stainless steel cases, and their sapphire backs leave the Genevan finishing in the open.

The deep, smooth black onyx dial calls to mind the swallowing mystery of the dark matter met in the sixth dimension. It is a surface that gives no light back, and the polished applied markers and three central hands upon it are legible for exactly that reason. Inside the forty millimetre steel case runs the new calibre FC-716, with a seventy two hour reserve. The subdial at 6 o’clock brings together the date and the moon phase, and the moon walks across a glossy black sky dusted with stars.

Heliotrope, the bloodstone, green with red flecks, recalls the supernova of the seventh dimension. In the maison’s own description it is a patchwork running from black through green to red, and because the inclusions belong to the stone itself, every dial is unique. Inside the thirty nine millimetre steel case sits the calibre FC-980. The tourbillon is at 6 o’clock, held under a bridge with hand-polished chamfers, swept over by the small seconds hand, and the cage is individually numbered and engraved.

The third watch carries a light, delicately textured turquoise dial. Turquoise is a hydrated phosphate of copper and aluminium, formed where groundwater seeps for millions of years through copper-bearing rock in arid country. The copper inside it, though, was not made on Earth. It too was cooked in the stellar furnaces of the seventh and eighth dimensions, and reached this place only through the death of a star. The stone is the work of slow geology; what it is made of is the work of slow astronomy.

The movement beneath that dial is occupied with the same long time. The calibre FC-776 is a perpetual calendar, and it has seven indications read off one surface: hours, minutes, day, date, month, leap year and moon phase. The forty millimetre steel case comes on a navy blue alligator strap, and the sapphire back shows a movement finished with perlage and Geneva stripes. The stone gathered millions of years in silence; the movement goes on counting the calendar of the century.

Time is not a smooth river but a divine cloth woven in eleven dimensions. While the elements cooked in the furnaces of supernovae and carried all the way to the earth become the cases on our wrists through The Elements Collection, our consciousness, each time it looks at the dial, collapses those infinite quantum possibilities and gives time and existence their meaning.
